When your teeth don’t get the regular dental cleanings and exams they need, you can get cavities. That’s common knowledge. What you might not know is that the bacteria causing tooth decay can creep inside the tooth. This can become very painful because the pulp inside the tooth is home to lots of nerve endings. A bacterial infection in your pulp can cause a near-constant amount of agony. Trying to suffer through the pain without treatment will just allow the bacteria grow fast enough to kill the tooth, requiring a tooth extraction. In order to save your tooth and end the pain caused by an infection, a root canal treatment may be necessary. This process removes the infected pulp for proper healing and oral health. What to Expect
A root canal is usually performed with local anesthesia to numb the teeth and gums, and sedation may be added if needed. Dr. Bistritz will remove the pulp from the infected tooth/teeth, then place a crown or inject filling material. Some patients are at higher risk of developing an infection (usually patients with heart problems like congenital defects and artificial heart valves), so Dr. Bistritz may prescribe a round of antibiotics before and after the root canal treatment.
If only local sedation is used, you will be able to drive and recover at home, but some sedation options may require you have a responsible adult pick you up. Patients will have temporary numbness and some may have minor discomfort that can usually be treated with an over-the-counter painkiller. If a temporary crown was placed over the tooth, the permanent crown will be placed and fitted at a separate appointment. After a root canal, oral care including brushing and flossing at home plus visits to the dentist as recommended are important to maintain the health of the treated tooth/teeth.
A root canal procedure is usually covered in part by dental insurance, but it may not cover additional expenses for emergency care. Our office accepts many forms of payment and we can help patients with financing plans, if needed.
