At Aventura Dental Center, our goal is to make you feel cared for as well as to treat your dental issues. That means we will always discuss the best dental treatment options, and we will try to find the least invasive way to solve your problems. However, sometimes oral surgery is not just the only solution, it’s the best one, too. Dr. Bistritz, a Doctor of Dental Surgery, can provide the unique results that are possible only through oral surgery instead of sending you out to see a specialist like other dentists might.

Tooth Extractions

If possible, we will always try to save a damaged or infected tooth, such as with dental crowns or root canals. But there are times when a tooth has been so damaged or neglected that keeping it there is much worse than removing it. If the tooth is damaged, it could continue to be a major source of pain. If infected, that infection could spread to your gums and put other teeth at risk. In such cases, Dr. Bistritz will extract the tooth. If needed, a dental implant can be placed in the gap to protect your jawbone from deterioration.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Your third molars (also called your wisdom teeth) sometimes need tooth extraction without any infection. Sometimes they come in wrong, pushing your existing teeth out of alignment or creating a breeding spot for harmful bacteria. It’s rare for wisdom tooth extraction to appear in just the right spot, so Dr. Bistritz can perform tooth extraction before they create significant and painful problems.

Bone Grafts

A bone graft is often used to prepare a spot in your mouth for a dental implant. In order for such an implant to work, your bone needs to be strong and dense enough to hold onto and fuse with the implant’s root. Sometimes bone is just naturally thin, but periodontal disease and tooth loss can also weaken the jawbone. The longer a spot goes without a root in place, the more it deteriorates. To fix this, Dr. Bistritz can graft bone material in your jaw. This fills in any spaces in the bone, making the spot stronger and capable of holding a dental implant.

Ridge Augmentation

After a tooth has been extracted, the surrounding area (such as the gumline or the jaw) can lose its natural shape. Normally, a tooth’s root extends into a socket in the alveolar ridge, the bony ridge that holds the teeth. When there’s no root in place, that socket will normally fill with bone and tissue so it looks normal. But sometimes the socket wall is lost, preventing any bone or tissue from filling it up. If this is your case, Dr. Bistritz can graft bone material in place to restore your ridge to its natural shape. Just like with regular bone grafts, ridge augmentations can help you have a dental implant where you normally couldn’t due to weak or thin bone.

Gingival Grafts

When the gums recede from periodontal disease or a similar problem, sometimes the roots of your teeth can be exposed. The roots are designed to stay below the gumline, and exposing them can make your teeth more sensitive to heat or cold and increase the risk of damage or decay. A gingival graft (also called a gum graft) is similar to a bone graft. Instead of using bone material, Dr. Bistritz would transfer gum tissue from your mouth to the problem area.

Oral surgery is sometimes necessary to give you the dental health you need. If it’s necessary, Dr. Bistritz has the training and experience to provide the surgery.
