What Causes Tooth Loss Anyway?
- September 20, 2016
Hello and welcome to another September edition of the blog!
Here at Aventura Dental Center, we know full well that nothing will destroy your smile (and your health, confidence, happiness, etc.) than tooth loss as an adult.
No matter how it happens, it will be painful, traumatic, and embarrassing. The good news is that, we can get you back on track fast with one of our restorative dentistry solutions. In fact, Dr. Bistritz is incredibly talented and highly regarded in this realm.
Still, we always prefer to help our patients maintain their natural smile whenever possible. To that end, today, we are going to look at some of the contributing factors behind tooth loss.
Keep reading to hear all about it, and then be sure to get in touch to schedule your next appointment at our Aventura, Florida dentist’s office.
How Old You Are
With age comes wisdom. But it also brings problems that you never expected. As we grow older our bodies evolve, and many unanticipated health issues can arise. You may be surprised to hear that in regards to tooth loss the odds are not in your favor once you pass 30. Sorry!
If You Are A Woman Or A Man
It’s been shown that men tend to lose a lot more teeth than women. So, especially if you are 35 or older, you will need to be mindful.
Your Oral Hygiene
When it comes to oral health, you have to do your part at home each and every day. If you don’t keep your teeth free of plaque bacteria you’re far more likely to end up with tooth decay and periodontal disease that will lead to tooth loss. So, brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash regularly! And find a good source of fluoride!
Teeth Cleanings & Oral Exams
Only about 13 percent of adults with tooth loss reported having a dental appointment within the prior six months.
Stopping by our office twice a year is an easy thing to do, and it could save your smile along with your life. We can screen for cancer and other bad things every time you come in for a cleaning and oral exam. Plus, we have the tools, training, and technology to get you back on track fast should anything ever be amiss.
If You Are A Smoker
Tobacco smoke is a major risk factor for gum disease as well as tooth loss. This is due to the fact that it changes the bacterial balance of your mouth. The sad truth is that if you’re a lifelong smoker it’s almost a sure thing that you’ll eventually need to replace some teeth.
Sugar plays a role in several ways. Sugar actually feeds the bacteria that causes decay in your teeth. Interestingly, we have also found that patients with diabetes are at extreme risk for gum disease (which is the leading cause of tooth loss in this country).
High Blood Pressure
Your body’s systems are all related. Gum disease and high-blood pressure are correlated but it seems to work in both directions.
