Adult Tooth Loss Doesn’t Have To Happen To You!
- June 4, 2017
Here’s a scary statistic: upwards of 70 percent of the adult population in our country will experience tooth loss of some kind over the course of a lifetime. Sad, but true! That’s why with today’s blog post we decided to look at why this happening–and more importantly, what you can do to sidestep such a traumatic and embarrassing episode.
Please continue reading to hear more about the underlying causes of adult tooth loss, and then be sure to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Bistritz–the go-to dentist in Aventura, FL for both tooth replacement treatments and preventive dental solutions.
#1 Bad Hygiene
When you do not stay on top of your home hygiene habits you will eventually experience a buildup of plaque, which is the sticky white film made of bacteria that lives in everyone’s mouths. This situation can lead to tooth decay and gum disease that can result in a complete loss of your teeth. Don’t risk it!
#2 Tooth Decay
There is a reason that we want to see you every 3-6 months. Tooth decay that gets out of control is a leading cause of tooth loss. Cavities can lead to tooth loss and/or extraction in cases that go undiagnosed or untreated. While it may be true that you can still end up with cavities even when you are taking good care of your teeth, brushing and flossing diligently will increase your protective factors.
#3 Gum Disease
As with cavities, gum disease is caused by oral bacteria. When that bacteria gets below your gumline it starts to cause inflammation, infection, and eventual weakening of your gums. They’ll start to recede, showing more and more of the roots of your teeth until they start to lose stability. The loss of stability as a result of untreated gum disease will get worse and worse until your gums and bone can’t support your teeth anymore. Most gum disease patients lose multiple teeth rather quickly as the infection spreads from one tooth to another! Gum disease can also lead to bigger problems elsewhere in your body once that bacteria gets loose in your bloodstream, so it is nothing to fool around with.
Life comes at you fast. A car crash, sports injury, or just a slip-and-fall injury at the pool can happen without much warning. Teeth are lost from that kind of trauma all the time. Often, a traumatically damaged tooth can be saved with a crown or other restoration, but that isn’t always the case. Sometimes there’s nothing that can be done. But don’t worry too much because Dr. Bistritz can set you up with a great replacement plan if that is what the situation calls for.
We can tell you that you will have more pain and expense later if you avoid seeing the dentist now, even if you are afraid because of a genuinely bad experience with a different doctor. Honestly, if you are up front about your situation, we can always work through those kind of issues together. Ultimately professional teeth cleanings are essential for eradicating food particles, bacteria, etc. And our thorough oral exams are able to catch problems like cavities far earlier than you can spot them. The same applies for gum disease. We’ll certainly be here for you, but we can’t do much good if you never come to see us on a regular basis. Don’t worry, we will do our best to make your experience a great one each and every time you are here!
