At Aventura Dental Center, we do more than just professionally clean your teeth and examine your mouth every six months. One great thing we can do to provide your smile with further protection is put dental sealants over your teeth. A dental sealant is a flexible plastic material that is placed on the top of the teeth to prevent plaque buildup and cavities. This is a treatment option for both adults and children, but especially ideal for younger patients as it helps prevent tooth decay. Call our Aventura, FL office to set up an appointment with our talented dentist, Dr. David Bistritz.

What to Expect

Getting sealants is a fast, easy process that can usually be done without any anesthesia or sedation. Before the sealants are applied, the teeth will be cleaned and polished to prevent plaque, tartar, and bacteria from being sealed into the tooth. Next, the tooth will be gently etched where the sealant will be placed, then rinsed and dried. Once the tooth is prepped, Dr. Bistritz will brush on the dental sealant and use a special light for about 30 seconds to set the sealant. After all has been applied and cured, Dr. Bistritz will ensure there is full coverage on the teeth and that the sealant is hardened.

Treatment Aftercare

With proper care including good home oral routines and regular check-ups, sealants can last up to ten years. Dr. Bistritz will check the integrity and wear of the sealants at every dental exam and let you know when the sealants need to be reapplied. You should continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and protect the sealants by avoiding stress on the teeth (grinding the teeth, using the teeth to open packages, etc.) While sealants are best for young children and teenagers, some adults may continue to get sealants if they are prone to cavities.

Insurance Coverage

Insurance companies usually cover the cost of dental sealants for children and teenagers, but some cover adults as well. Our front office will contact your insurance company to get the details of your coverage. If your insurance does not cover your sealants, our office does have payment plans — the cost is generally less than a filling or other repair.
